As Aristotle put in Politics, “man is the only animal whom she has endowed with the gift of speech”. From ancient Greece to our digital present, it has been language, culture, and the humanities that define and connect us as human beings. In today’s technology-driven world, where machines can simulate conversation and algorithms shape public discourse, it is more essential than ever to reaffirm the human core of communication and the cultural roots of understanding.
Against this background, the founding of the Academy of Language and Culture (LAC) becomes more important than ever. Launched on 1st July 2024, the Academy brings together three interdependent departments — English Language and Literature (ENG), Humanities and Creative Writing (HMW), and Translation, Interpreting, and Intercultural Studies (TIIS)—alongside the Centre for Translation (CTN). Together, we form a vibrant, interconnected community committed to advancing the study of language, culture, and multilingual communication.
Yet our goal is not merely to preserve tradition — it is to bridge tradition and modern technology, and to ensure that the core values of language, culture, and the humanities endure in a digital age. Throughout changing times, our commitment to Artes Liberales — a liberal, holistic, humanistic approach — remains central. We believe that while digital tools and artificial intelligence may transform how we communicate, it is the human capacity for empathy, creativity, and critical reflection that gives language its true meaning.
As we move forward, we invite you to join us in reaffirming the enduring power of the humanities. At the Academy of Language and Culture, we believe that in order to shape the future, we must first understand the foundations of what makes us human.
To be a leading centre of excellence that fosters linguistic diversity, creative expression, and intercultural communication, empowering students and scholars to bridge cultural gaps, innovate in literary and translation arts, and contribute to a globally interconnected world.
